About Northgate

Northgate is north Seattle's regional hub, clustered around Interstate 5 and NE Northgate Way. It grew up around Northgate Mall, which opened on April 21, 1950 and is described as the first post-war shopping mall in the United States — the first regional shopping center to call itself a "mall." For decades the neighborhood was organized around the car: the mall, its parking lots, and the freeway, where I-5's reversible express lanes begin and end.

That is changing. In 2018 Simon Property Group announced plans to turn the 55-acre mall site into a mixed-use district of housing, offices, hotels and retail, now called Northgate Station. The first major piece, the Kraken Community Iceplex, opened in September 2021 with three sheets of ice: it is the Seattle Kraken's training facility and also hosts public skating, youth and adult hockey, figure skating and other community programs. A hotel opened on the site in 2025, and construction of the first apartment buildings began in 2024.

Transit drives much of the change. Sound Transit's Northgate light rail station, on the southwest side of the mall site and just east of I-5, opened on October 2, 2021 with the Northgate Link extension, along with the Roosevelt and U District stations. The site has been a bus transit center since 1992, and the rail station averaged about 4,200 boardings per weekday in 2025. The John Lewis Memorial Bridge, a pedestrian and bike bridge over I-5 that opened the same day, links the station to North Seattle College and Licton Springs.

Northgate is one of the busiest police areas in the city. SPD dispatched officers to 13,099 community-generated events in its Northgate area over the twelve months ending September 2026 — third among 58 SPD neighborhood areas, behind only Capitol Hill and the downtown commercial core, and just 9 events short of downtown. A regional shopping center, a major transit hub, a college, an ice arena, freeway interchanges and a growing residential population are all inside one area, so a high count is not surprising, and it reflects the number of people passing through rather than a judgment about safety. Our explainer on neighborhood dispatch patterns goes into that.

The call mix leans toward property and vehicles. Theft makes up 6.7% of Northgate's dispatched events (city 5.2%), the vehicle-related "Automobiles" group 4.5% (city 3.3%), and suspicious-circumstance reports 17.1% (city 14.5%). Traffic, perhaps surprisingly, is a smaller share than average at 12.6% against 16.4% citywide. One likely reason is that collisions on I-5 itself are generally handled by the Washington State Patrol rather than SPD, so the freeway's traffic doesn't appear in these numbers. Police calls peak in the 3 p.m. hour, matching shopping and commuting hours.

Seattle Fire recorded 2,809 incidents within the area shown on this page's map, about 8 a day. Medical calls dominate even more than usual: basic "Aid Response" is 53.0% of incidents and paramedic-level "Medic Response" 13.5%, both above the citywide shares of 49.8% and 10.5%. The "Trans to AMR" label — which, as its name suggests, marks a hand-off to a private ambulance (AMR) for transport — appears at well over twice its citywide rate. Outdoor fire types are less common than citywide: illegal burns, for example, are 1.1% of incidents here against 2.6% citywide.

What the dispatch feed looks like here

Expect a busy daytime feed centered on the Northgate Station retail site, the light rail station and transit center, and the commercial strips along NE Northgate Way and 5th Avenue NE. Shoplifting and theft reports, vehicle prowls and other parking-lot calls, suspicious-person reports and requests to check on people's welfare are the everyday police mix. Medical-aid calls come from the shopping center, the transit hub and the neighborhood's apartment buildings. Hockey games, skating sessions and events at the Iceplex add foot traffic in the evenings and on weekends.

Collisions on the I-5 mainline will mostly not appear in police data, but crashes on surface streets near the interchanges and around the transit center will. Seattle Fire does respond to freeway crashes inside the city (they carry their own "MVI Freeway" label), so those can still appear as fire pins.

Fire and police coverage

The nearest Seattle Fire station is Station 31, which houses Engine 31, Ladder 5 and Medic 31. Since 2019 it has operated from an interim site at 10503 Interlake Avenue North, west of the neighborhood, while the city builds a permanent replacement station; construction began in 2024. Other nearby stations include Station 39 in Lake City (Engine 39), Station 24 in Bitter Lake (Engine 24) and Station 16 at Green Lake (Engine 16). Under the closest-available-unit model any of them may answer a Northgate call; see how Seattle Fire coverage works.

Northgate is in SPD's North Precinct, whose station is at 10049 College Way North, just west of the freeway. In the data, Northgate's events fall in the Nora and Lincoln sectors. Response times stand out: officers were on scene within seven minutes for 54.4% of Northgate's Priority 1 calls and within ten minutes for 77.0%, well above the North Precinct's 38.4% within seven and above the city's 50.5%. Being close to the precinct station and having a compact, busy area with a lot of officer activity are plausible reasons, but the data cannot tell us which factor matters. Our response-time analysis explains the measure.

Reading the map

Each pin above is one dispatch record with usable coordinates inside the Northgate map area; click a pin or a feed entry to highlight it. Seattle Fire records appear within a few minutes of dispatch. Police records arrive much later, because the city refreshes the SPD dataset about once a day, so police pins describe earlier events rather than what is happening now. An empty feed only means nothing in the current citywide window fell inside this area.

About the data. Police figures come from the Seattle Police Department's Call Data (data.seattle.gov dataset 33kz-ixgy), October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. The raw file has one row per responding unit; we count distinct CAD events, and only dispatched (community-generated) events, not officer on-view activity. Neighborhood assignment uses SPD's own neighborhood label ("Northgate"), which does not exactly match the area on this page's map. Response-time shares use Priority 1 events with a recorded time from call queued to first officer on scene. Fire figures come from Seattle Fire Real-Time 911 (dataset kzjm-xkqj) for the same twelve months, counted inside this page's map bounding box. Call types describe what was reported at dispatch, not what responders found.
